This is complex problem even if your points are close enough together for you to assume that the earth is flat. You will need to check that the polygon is closed and non-self-intersecting. If you do this the formula is Wikipedia page here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polygon Note that the formula assumes that the earth is flat.
