I don't think its as trivial as you suspect I'm afraid. The API is new, not just an upgrade of the old one. We now have markers, polylines and polygons and overlays have become TileOverlays. I'm sure there are going to be ways to minimize the migration effort from old to new but I don't think it will be trivial unless your v1 Maps project is trivial.
All in all, looks like there are some really cool new toys to play with. I think I'm going to setup a little sample project to mess around with the new features before I decide how to incorporate them.
