This is in the android.test.ActivityUnitTestCase code:

try{
  // do some stuff here to build the activity to test
} catch (Exception e) {
  assertNotNull(newActivity);
}

Why isn't that exception logged, re-thrown, or even it's .toString()
included in the assertion failure?

IMO, this is a text book "How not to handle an error ever." example.
