Don't confuse him with false information.

Android natively supports all those actions under 
android.intent.action.MEDIA_BUTTON, 
which is what he used
Your example is false as well since multiple apps can catch this event, 
they just need to be kind to one another. see

Regarding the original question: try that link without unregistering on 
onPause, maybe it would work, my guess is that you'd have to keep a partial 
wake lock .
