runOnUiThread() is the solution....

                Thread t = new Thread() {
                        public void run() {
                                f.runOnUiThread(new Runnable() {
                                        @Override
                                        public void run() {
                                                holdGame(3000);
                                                
setContentView(R.layout.game_end_menu);
                                                initGameOver();
                                        }
                                });
                        }
                };
                t.start();
