You might find the Heirachy viewer some use as well, you can find in in the SDK package in the toold folder.
Also in his book "Android wireless application development" Shane Condor describes how to draw a chessboard as well as working with bitmaps and other bits and pieces you might find useful, its by no means comprehensive but I imagine could be a good starting point.
