If I was to make an assumption, I would guess that the temperature reading is up to the hardware device itself if there were one there. Anything in the API that the Android SDK provides would confine the hardware to follow a particular format for sharing the data with people, but it would not define how the hardware gets its reading. Also, make sure that your device actually has one of those sensors. Just because the sensor exists in the API means that the phone you are using actually has that sensor available to you.
