This is a default behaviour in Portrait mode only when there is a hardware keyboard.
If there is no physical keyboard, then the on screen keyboard should show up in both orientations. This is a default behaviour and you don't need to do anything special for it. Make sure that you are using the EditText and it has focus, or it is clicked.
