Just got my G1 over the mail. I have to admit that it is much better
than I expected. I even feel excited over having it because I think
that it has potential to make several developers quite comfortable,
economically speaking. Although not as much potential as the iPhone;
at least not at the present moment.
I've had an iPhone for almost a year and I'm quite familiar with it.
I've also done plenty of development on it and have even published two
apps in the iPhone AppStore.
With regards to Android, I've been an Android developer almost since
day one. I submitted three applications to the first Android challenge
(unfortunately did not win).
Now that you know my perspective here are some comparisons I want to
share with you.
1.Ease of development.
I think it is easier to develop in the Android platform. The reason
for this is that it uses Java which has garbage collection. Also, you
can use Eclipse for your development.
iPhone does have a very good software development kit but the big
problem is that it doesn't have garbage collection. If you screw up a
reference somewhere you could easily spend days or weeks trying to
figure out why is it that your app is crashing "randomly".
2. Potential for making money.
I think that at this point iPhone has the biggest potential for
making money to a poor developer coding his days away. In the future
however, as more Android devices become available Android's potential
may increase. That is, if it doesn't die.
3. Look and Feel
Since the first day I started using my iPhone it just felt right.
As if they had designed the iPhone specially for me. One big reason
why it has become so popular with consumers.
With Android, on the other hand, my first impresion was that it
didn't "feel" right. Maybe because it has more than one button, maybe
because I have to pull the tab up to view the rest of the applications
but it just doesn't feel right. Anyway, maybe this feeling will
decrease as days go by.
