Some investigation at my end confirms what you have said. Both amazon.com and PayPal allow U.S. import purchases as a "checking account" transaction, which bypasses the debit service completely and deals directly with the banks. Based on your comments it sounds like this is the normal process for on-line stores in the U.S. Part of the confusion here is that in the U.K. a bank "debit transfer" is the same as a U.S. "checking account transfer", and that Maestro is a near-transparent part of the process (i.e. the end user doesn't usually make the distinction when setting up a payment). So it seems the actual problem here is not that Google checkout does not support Maestro transactions, it's that it doesn't support "checking account" transfers. This is, of course, assuming that my colleagues are mistaken when they tell me that they can buy U.S. applications on the Apple AppStore using their Maestro cards... I can only assume that the AppStore is actually setting up a checking account transaction for these payments.
