Actually the technique for pushing data into webbrowsers goes by the name of 
COMET nowadays. Wikipedia seems to have a nice article explaining it.
(Basically it's about keeping a socket open so that the server can send 
notifications immediatly. Similiar to IMAP idle, which is despite contrary 
claims push email, considering that most mobiles are hidden behind a 
noncooperative NAT router)
