I think you touched a nerve there gfindster.
I had the same issue - a very unhelpful "null" error in resource
AndroidManifest.xml of Type "Android XML Format Problem"
The following line from my manifest was the problem:
<uses-sdk minSdkVersion="2" />
Either change it to the following, or remove it:
<uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="2" />
