Well, it is up to the application/widget developer to do things like
this.

There are several GPS programs that respond to proximity, no widgets
(that I am aware of) though. Copilot does, it has a function where it
will wake up when you are approaching the "next turn", which actually
requires use of a service and/or intent since activities shut down
when the screen goes to sleep. (note: I use "and/or" since I *think*
that there is more going on than just waiting until a proximity alert
is triggered, i.e. if you go off the established route then the
proximity alert may NEVER be triggered).
