Have you looked at PhoneGap? It seems promising, except I couldn't get it to work on a 1.6 device but the idea is very good. I like the concept of using webview as the UI and integrating into the device with JavaScript. While this approach would be difficult for a fast acting game or similar, it would work well for most of the apps that are out there. I'd like to see more of this type of usage. There is no shame in webview as the UI!
