Absolutely. Story from the field. Couple weeks back I built a
prototype (got paid for that, which is nice) for a Bluetooth-connected-
GPS/picture taking data acquisition app. Nice project, Android ideally
suited for this kind of project. App distribution NOT through Android
Market or other app store. It would be incorrect to say that writing
down the instructions about all the caveats regarding devices/carrier
combos that were suitable for this kind of project took as long as
building the prototype itself. But you get the picture. Despite the
capabilities of Android and devices such as the N1, trying to "sell"
the idea of using Android based smartphones for any professional
project seems hopeless. Blame it on "uneducated" clients who don't
know about Android, but this really doesn't fly as an
"excuse" (customer's always right, right?). The interesting part here
however is how in the small this reflects on the support nightmare
that Android apps (of complexity) present to app developers. As far as
I can tell from personal experience and what I hear, outside the
trivial, Android app development seems to be slowly imploding. Bummer,
'nother missed opportunity, it seems (after WAP, J2ME).
