Most devices function differently. The N1 is the best device for development, as it is the least buggy and closest to spec.
Other HTC devices are really good for testing, although each one seems to handle resource management and threading a little differently, which can create unexpected surprises. In my experience, the Motorola devices are probably the worst for development. I've seen a number of complete app crashes (webviews, memory cleanup) that have occurred on Motos that did not occur on the N1 or any other device. Most of these were bugs were device specific so I needed to create work-arounds. That said the moto devices have a huge distribution (much. much bigger than the N1), so getting at least one Moto device for testing is useful. The G2 looks slick but haven't tried it yet.
