Now there's gmail, GAE, Android Developer account and a Google Checkout Merchant Account. All it takes is something going wrong with one of them, and you get kicked out with no access to any of them. Factor in the famous customer support that the G offers... and increasingly it becomes more compelling *not* to sign up to anything new.
