A contrasting view is that a very effective way to learn quite a bit about 
both (especially for someone who may have background in other language) is 
to dive in an solve a real problem, perhaps by adapting existing code that 
does something similar.

There are some potentially serious "gotchas" that can be overlooked that 
way - fortunately academic computer science programs (the poster seems to 
be in one) tend to put a lot of emphasis on the kinds of things that tend 
to get done subtly wrong when code-monkeying.  The combination of class 
material providing awareness of what to watch out for, with practical 
experience of what kinds of things seem to work, should be pretty good.
