I started by splitting evenly amongst all the networks available via Admob mediation for about a week to get a baseline. I then narrowed down on the networks that were giving the best performance and switched off the others. It's that simple.
The only pain (IMHO) from the Admob mediation route is that it requires inclusion of 1. The Admob mediation library 2. The library for each network that you want to integrate 3. The mediation adapter library for each network that you want to integrate. So it adds a bit of bloat, but that wasn't as big a deal as what I thought it was going to be.
