I just fixed it a while after posting, sorry - murphy's law in action.
To answeryself, edit /system/etc/mound.conf and use /dev/block/sdb1 -
at least this was the right block device for my eee pc 701 sd card in
android - in ubuntu eee it is sdc :-p

Now I must try to find a way to make sound work, otherwise, it is
looking and working great, and now I'll be able to install apps such
as debian prompt on it.
