Because it's possible to write code that compiles with Java 1.6 but
not with Java 1.5 (even with the -source option), and because of some
obscure issues of compatibility and availability of Java 1.5 between
desktop operating systems, the Android source code can currently only
be compiled with Java 1.5 as a matter of policy.

There's an ongoing effort to allow both Java 1.5 and Java 1.6
toolchains, which should end up being visible in a future release.
