Seems like a long time to me, How much data are we talking about? I've never looked at dm-crypt however there are always a few potential bottle necks. Possible Bottlenecks: Busses (unlikely depending on megabytes) Flash speed (unlikely depending on megabytes) Processor and blocking random device (probably) OpenBSD's random device is a good example producing 100s of megabytes per second of quite strong! entropy on x86. They recently replaced all random devices with it, so all random sources are now quite strong.
