Yes, at the extreme by single stepping through the program and examining 
the registers and memory state in between.

As above, the kernel has the power to make *anything* involve the kernel.

So the question remains, is the kernel armed to be on the lookout for your 
operation of instance?  If not, make it be.  How much work that will be (if 
someone else already has a solution you can activate or patch in) depends 
on what the operations of interest are.
