Ah, there's other interesting studies too. A book comes to mind that
discusses instability introduced by security software (its not limited
to anti-virus software):
What’s worse, this situation [software stability] isn’t improving
over time, with the number of kernel crashes due to anti-virus
software remaining more or less constant while most other
classes of drivers get better over time [432] (one of the
contributing reasons why Microsoft got into the anti-virus
business was because it helped reduce the number of
Windows crashes, where “Windows crash” meant “crash
caused by third-party anti-virus product but blamed on
Microsoft”).

Trust us :)
I thinks its prudent to ask what's going on since a security app
should improve security and *not* reduce reliability.
