Your gallery is most likely trying to find any photos on your Picasa/Google
Photos account-- hence why it keeps trying to reach the internet.
If you want to make your phone more secure, do the following.
- Only install apps from the playstore, you have a much higher chance of
obtaining malware if you download from untrusted sources.
- Add a Pattern or PIN or Password to your lockscreen (Settings -->
Security or Lock Screen)
- For added security, try to make a passcode that uses a mix of
numbers, letters (upper and lower) and special characters.
- Make sure your phone is updated (if there is one available)
- Do not connect to public WiFi access points unless you're using a VPN,
this will protect all of your data from attackers who'll sniff your traffic.
- Do not leave ADB (USB Debugging) enabled when you are not actively
using it.
- Always read the permissions when installing applications, if you ask
yourself "why the heck is it asking for *that?*" you probably shouldn't
install it.
