1st what type of phone, model, ...
How, and if it is possible can depend on this, although in general you can root 
an Android phone, but depending on what model, you may lose services (if the 
phone manufacturer has sw detecting rooting, it may disable some features, ex. 
Samsung KNOX in GS-5)

Why do you want to root your phone, without a clear motive, maybe not is better
