Hi Dirk,

Yes I would say you should move to 3.x, its a huge improvement over andromda 2.x. We're currently in our 3rd milestone release, however I would say its pretty stable.

Subject: [Andromda-devel] Should I switch from AndroMDA 2.x to 3.x now?

Hello,

I'm a user of AndroMDA since spring 2003. It's great!

My main interest is to add some extension to AndroMDA like:
 - An API that looks like the reflection API and is a
   fascade to the model.
 - An optional extension (which uses the reflection like API)
that makes possible to use templates written in pure Java.
 - An optional extension that merges user source code from a last
generated version to the actually generated code, and so there
is no need for generating abstract classes and do complicated
merges by hand when you add some methods to a class.
 - An Environment in which AndroMDA and all other OpenSource you
need (like ant, cvs, junit, a wiki, ...) for efficient developing
one ore more projects. The environment provides build scripts
for full automatical light and full build and deployment.

All these is done, but unfortunaly not adapted to AndroMDA 3.0.
I use AndroMDA 2.x without metamodel fascades. So now I think it
would be some (or much :-() work to adapt the extensions...

But I'm a little bit confused about when it is the best time to
switch to Version 3.x. On the official website from Matthias
there are no recommendations.

From the informations on http://team.andromda.org/ (some do a good
job on documenting the stuff! [now ;-)]) I guess I should switch
right now.

What are your recommendations for me?

Cheers

Dirk Pessarra

Hi Chad,

thanks for your long email with your explanations and hints for
improvement. Tonight, I haven't got the time to comment fully - I'll
have more time on Friday and Saturday.
However, I have done a few things to remedy the situation:

* I have modified cartridges/maven.xml (see the CVS commit). The test
whether the regeneration from the UML model is required did not work
properly. I removed part of the conditional, now it works correctly.
When the model is unchanged and I set the property
-Dmaven.test.skip=true that you told me, then the Hibernate cartridge
builds off line in 30 seconds (on my slow 512MB laptop) which is
perfectly OK.

* The sample that uses the Hibernate cartridge builds off line in one
minute and 10 seconds which is also perfectly OK.

Now, the development cycle is short enought that I will be able to
make the next few changes to the Hibernate cartridge easily next week.
I have also ordered two 512MB chips for my laptop - the UPS website
says that they have been delivered to my home today (I cannot check
because I am travelling today).

To sum up: Thanks for your hints - I am now able to work, so my
emotions calmed down. Nevertheless, when I skim through the models and
the code, I'll check for possible simplifications and post them to the
list as I really like slim software products (I admit that I still
need to say what "slim" means for AndroMDA).

Thanks for your work...
Matthias

P.S.: The first registrations for the openArchtecture conference
(www.openarchitecture.de) are coming in. I am looking forward to your
and Wouter's talks within the openAndroMDA user meeting at November
30... :-)
