Hello,

yes, so far you only wrote about htdig's pros.

That is not true! Isn't it a pro if I say Lucene is pretty extensible?

[...]

According to your below remarks, I have the impression
that a simple search engine (and not a search engine API)
would be sufficient, because you just want to index text
based file types (like HTML or XML files).

So Lucene would be still powerfull framework, but it also
might be an overhead if it comes to your special needs.

well, we like to discuss topics like this in the open, as opposed to
having one guy making all the decisions (especially with potential new
members) is that so strange? It's not that we don't trust you .. it's just
that we haven't heard any hard arguments against lucene yet.

For me it was never to argue against something or for something, I just wanted to make the point that Lucene ...

 - Is an API and not a search engine, so it requires
   programming.
 - Lucene might be an overhead if you just need to
index text files. Does it make sense to code
Java if you could have the same by just typing ...

   $ > rpm --install glimpse-someversion.rpm

   That's another search engine, btw.

[...]

could you please tell us why ? sorry if asking this offends you, but we
are really interested to know, and that way we have a certain peace of
mind.

These are the steps of a possible htdig installation process:

 $ > rpm --install htdig-someversion.rpm

 * create a custom htdig configuration file based
   on an example configuration file.
 * customize some htdig templates to fit the CI
of the AndroMDA web site (usually header/footer.html
   wrapper.html and syntax.html)
 * add a CRON job that will index your web site
   on a regular basis.

And finally as I said, it took me less then a hour
to setup htdig and an additional day to customize
the HTML templates.

Frankly, this discussion became way to complicated
and I partitially don't understand your objections.

So I am asking again ...

 - If there is a guy having plenty of knowledeg about
setting up htdig and some knowledge about Lucene,
why not stick with his recommendation to use htdig?
Especially if you just want to index text files.

You know if you would say, ok we want to index
text files stored within a MySQL database I would
completly understand your concerns. But it is
my very impression that a simple solution like
htdig is sufficient in this case.

This is my offer:

 - I will setup a search engine that does not require
   programing based on a API.
 - I will setup a search engine that is completly
functional within less than two or three days.
 - I will setup a search engine that does not need much
   maintenance.
 - If there is evidence that the search engine that
I did install does not fit your needs, I will finally
   install and maintain Lucene.
