Hmmm...You're right about the required property thing. I added another required property and it built successfully.
To be honest, I'm not sure exactly how I would fix it. Actually, I rethought the design and decided that modeling it as a required relationship is the wrong thing to do since in any tree heiarchy there has to be a root node, hence no parent category. I changed the multiplicity from 1 to 0..1. So, with this line of thought I would consider the current desing a feature and not a bug! Lesson learned and thanks for all your help.
