Hello Jesse, 

you are right, the device is mounted with "sync", w/o sync we have write
speeds of about 30Mb/s. We have to look for a balance between low data
loss and high performance. We think about a periodic sync in background
as a compromise.

Or is there an other possibility to write VFAT on USB-Sticks fast and
secure?
