Oh, I think I get it.  You updated the kernel first, before upgrading 
the distribution.  I did things in the opposite order, upgrading the 
distribution, which included upgrading the modules to 2.6.21 versions, 
but then had to separately re-flash the kernel.  I would suggest that 
that is the proper way to do it, since you upgrade the distribution 
while you still have working modules, so you can use your preferred net 
access, if any, then flash the new kernel.
