Yeah, for an advanced user it is trivial, but you still have to drop to 
a root shell and run apt-get instead of using the provided package 
manager (which I find to be a piece of garbage, quite honestly).

The issue with the package manager is that they don't allow package 
'mixing' between repos anymore, although I think another issue with 
maemo is the sheer number of repos - instead of contributing to a 
central repo, everyone has their own - kind of inevitably leads to 
package conflicts IM (not-so-educated) O.
