Chad, Thanks for the input. Both these approaches would appear to require the source distribution (and in at least on case rebuilding it, which fails for me - I'll try again).
This rather makes the binary distributions useless. Is this optimal for Angstrom or would it be preferable to have a root password so that the binary distributions would be easy to use?
