Replying to my own question....

Seriously, I've always been a bit uncomfortable with the instructions
in the Wiki list of required files:
gnu-tar
hdimage1.tgz (rename from XXX-image-XXX-spitz.rootfs.tar.gz)
zImage.bin (rename from zImage-XXXXX.bin)
updater.sh (rename from updater.sh.spitz)
to rename .tar.gz to .tgz but I figures if it works for one format,
why not another? Anyway, after I extracted hdimage1.tar, and then
gzipped the result, and finally renamed that, I got the ROM to flash.
During the first boot, I got screen after screen of messages beginning
with
"Couldn't open /lib/modules/2.6.24 no such file or directory"
I assume that's something I did wrong in the image builder. Any ideas?
I'm reluctant to put anything into bugzilla since I'm not sure this
isn't my error.
