I think the .img file is to simplify the formatting. So if your sd card shows up as /dev/sdb than you could do
dd if=/path/to/sd.img of=/dev/sdb But make sure that you are pointing it towards your sd card and not some other drive. If you manually setup your sd card than you don't need the sd card image.
