As I understand, you flashed the image and tried to boot it. Right? As I posted today,
IIRC 2.6.x kernel family does not support internal flash on h39xx. Hence the kernel cannot find the root.
I don't really know how it's going nowadays. Developers could confirm or decline. Anyway, I could run Angstrom (2007.12) on my h3970 with the root on SD. Dig my messages in this list for details and http://bugs.openembedded.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4224
