the last embedded device I used had no battery-backed clock, so you'll
have to use ntp

what I did was to write the current date/time to a file in a cron-job
and then on boot, before ntp, restore the time from that file. at
least that meant the device has some semblance of sanity when it came
to date-stamping stuff.
