Well, thanks!

While I suspect the rely was tongue in cheek, for whatever reason I cannot
boot with the cable plugged in and get working ethernet, but the hot plug
suggestion worked - gave me a working usb0... which while unexpected (I was
expecting eth0) is fine with me!
