You can’t use JavaScript in angular expressions <https://docs.angularjs.org/guide/expression>. Only a small subset, with a couple off angular extensions is allowed. However you can use the ternary (?) operator. But in your case that isn’t needed anyway! something like this: ng-change="System.Register.ValidUser =(UserMap(System.Register.Username) != null && UserMap(System.Register.Username) != undefined)" will probably do what you want.
