Hmm, the wrong use of ngModel was not your only problem. ui-typeahead seems 
a bit lazy picking up the results. I updated my plunk to (big hack just for 
testing!!) to inject an apply, it helps a bit, but not with the first 
letter. the typeahead seems to need 2 letters at least.
Sorry, I don't have time to dig into ui-typeahead for this now. 

Hope that this still helps you a bit along to figure out what is happening. 
(seems to be something inside ui-typeahead, and you changing it's data from 
underneath.)
