Actually, because the new packages are now compliant with the package
sp. The best way to import your spatial data is to use the functions
of the packages sp and maptools. The particular function to be used
depends on the data available to you. If you have an asc file storing
raster data, you can use readAsciiGrid from the package maptools.
Otherwise, have a look at the help pages from the functions returned by:
