I wrote up some recent work I've done with Annotator, FYI:

The work on H2O is fairly customized, packaged into a single plugin (not
very shareable) against Annotator 2.0, and does require some core code
modifications. However, I'm working with another client on a similar
colored highlight tagging feature that will be open source and more
modular that is based on my work on H2O.
