Dear Colleagues,

On 14 March 2014, the US Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications
and Information Administration (NTIA) announced the intention to transition the
oversight of key Internet functions, including the Internet Assigned Numbers
Authority (IANA) to the global Internet multi-stakeholder community.

Together with the Number Resource Organization (NRO), AFRINIC has welcomed the
transition announcement and is committed to ensuring that the needs of the
African Internet community are fully represented throughout the transition
process.

The transition of the IANA function is crucial to securing the continued
stability and accessibility of the Internet as well as ensuring a true
multi-stakeholder model of Internet governance.

Your input

AFRINIC is seeking input and feedback from the community about the transition
process and the evolution of IANA. A dedicated AFRINIC mailing list will be
created to enable the community to discuss the IANA transition process and to
provide valuable input and feedback about this important development in the
evolution of the Internet.

Details about this mailing list will be announced shortly.

Have your say at the Africa Internet Summit 2014 (AIS’14)

A panel session on the "Resiliency and stability of IANA functions: what
accountability mechanisms should be put in place?" will be held during the
AIS’14, which takes place in Djibouti from 25 May to 6 June. There will also be
further discussion about the IANA transition during the AFRINIC-20 Meeting
taking place from 4-6 June during the AIS’14.

We invite the community to join in initial discussions in person at the event
and online via remote participation.
