Dear colleagues:

I hope all is well with you. I am writing in my capacity as the 2008 Petition Drive coordinator for the Libertarian Party of Virginia to provide some information to you about our ongoing petition drives, and to request some information from you.

Tomorrow (Tuesday, May 6) is a day in which several communities in Virginia will hold municipal elections. If you live in or near such a community, or if you are willing to travel to such a community, you will have the opportunity to gather petition signatures at polling stations for the purpose of placing the Libertarian Party presidential ticket and the Redpath for U.S. Senate campaign on the ballot in November. In a forwarded message to the LPVA Announcement list on Saturday, Bill Redpath provided a list of localities in which elections will take place tomorrow. If by chance you did not receive this message, please let me know and I shall send you the list.

Petitioning at polling stations during municipal elections is particularly helpful to our petition drive, because people who are able to vote in these elections are registered to vote, and we know in what congressional district and political jurisdiction they are registered to vote. Thus, all (or nearly all) of the signatures gathered at the polling stations tomorrow will be valid signatures. If you need petition forms, you may download them from the following locations:

LPVa presidential petition:
www.lpva.com/Archives/Documents/Forms/2008LPVaPresidentialPetition.pdf
(available on the LPVa petition drive webpage at
www.lpva.com/HTML/2008petitionDrive.html)

Redpath U.S. Senate petition:
http://redpath2008.charles-eby.com/RedpathPetitionForm.pdf
(available on the Redpath for Senate webpage at www.redpath2008.com/)

Please note that when you print the petition form, it must be printed on white legal-size (8.5" x 14") paper. Page 1 of the petition form must be printed on one side of the paper; page 2 must be printed on the other side.

I have prepared some relatively detailed instructions and tips concerning the petitioning process (the process for the U.S. Senate petition is essentially the same as that of the presidential petition). One may download these instructions (in the form of a Word document of size 61kb) by clicking on the appropriate link on the petition drive webpage. One may access the instructions directly at www.lpva.com/Archives/Documents/Election/2008PetitionDrivePetitioningInst ructions.doc.

If you have already gathered petition signatures for either the presidential ticket or the Redpath Senate campaign, please let me know how many signatures you have gathered (and how many have been notarized), and indicate how many you have gathered in each congressional district. If I may request, please keep me updated on a regular basis throughout the drive as to the number of signatures you have in your possession, as it is very important for me to have a reasonably accurate count of the number of signatures we have gathered so far.

As I have noted previously, if each LPVa member will gather 20 signatures for the presidential petition and 20 signatures for the Redpath petition, both petition drives will be successful at essentially $0 cost to the LPVa. Indeed, since most people can easily gather 20 signatures in two hours of petitioning, we could wrap up the petition drive in an afternoon if every member will help to the tune of 20 signatures (less than one full sheet of signatures).

Please do not hesitate to contact me or Mr. Redpath if you require information about the petitioning process. You are welcome to contact me via e-mail or by calling me at my home near Free Union (434 973-5958); you may contact him at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or (703) 864-2132.

Thank you for your work for liberty.

    Take care,
    Jim
