Dear colleagues:
I hope all is well with you. I am writing in my capacity as the 2008
petition drive coordinator for the Libertarian Party of Virginia to
provide you with some information about the presidential petition
drive, and to
request some information from you.
I am pleased to report that we have evidently gathered at least 10,000
signatures throughout Virginia for the LP presidential ticket of Bob
Barr and Wayne Root. I hope to conduct the initial submission of
petitions to the State Board of Elections in Richmond in the near
future. The sooner we conduct our initial submission, the sooner we
shall receive a report from the SBE as to how many valid signatures
(if any)
we need to submit in order to conclude the petition drive
successfully. Specifically, I hope to be able to conduct the initial
submission on or about June 30.
Allow me to request the following from you:
1) Please let me know as soon as possible whether you have any
petition signatures in your possession. If you have such signatures,
please let me know how many signatures you hold and (to the best of
your ability) the number of signatures you have from each
congressional district. (We must satisfy a distribution requirement,
in that we must submit at least 400 valid signatures from each of the
eleven congressional districts in Virginia.)
Note: If you have already mailed signatures to me, please contact me
to confirm that you sent the signatures, and to indicate roughly when
you did so.
2) If it is not too much trouble, please have your petition sheets
notarized and mail them as soon as possible to me at the following
address:
PO Box 274
Free Union, VA 22940
Before mailing the signatures, please let me know how many signatures
you are sending, and indicate the means by which the signatures will
be mailed. For example, if you are planning to send the signatures
via registered mail, please let me know this. (It would be best to
mail the signatures in a manner that allows the mailing to be tracked
in case the mailing doesn't reach me.) If you have the opportunity,
it is not a bad idea as an added safety measure to make a photocopy of
each petition sheet you send me.
3) Are you willing and able to gather petition signatures during the
next 2-3 weeks? If so, how many signatures do you anticipate
gathering? We should be prepared to gather an additional 1,000 -
2,000 signatures in total to conclude the petition drive successfully.
In particular, we may need some additional signatures in the Ninth
Congressional District to ensure that we satisfy the distribution
requirement for that district.
4) Are you aware of any good opportunities for petitioning in your
general area during the next 2-3 weeks? That is, are there any
festivals, concerts, or other large gatherings of people in your area
during the next 2-3 weeks at which we can gather petition signatures?
If so, please let me know the details of these events as soon as
possible.
5) Following the nomination of Bob Barr and Wayne Root as the LP
presidential ticket, some LPVa members asked whether they should
scratch out or blacken the names of our "lineholder candidates" (Mr.
Nolan and Mr. Bergland) on the petition forms, and replace those names
with the names of Mr. Barr and Mr. Root. As I have mentioned
previously, please do not alter the petition form. We need to submit
petitions signatures on forms that feature the names of Mr. Nolan and
Mr. Bergland. Unless something extraordinary occurs, if our petition
drive is successful, the names of Mr. Barr and Mr. Root will be on the
Virginia ballot this fall due to the fact that Virginia allows
substitution concerning presidential and vice presidential petitions.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or
comments about the petition process. You are welcome to contact me
via e-mail or to call me at (434) 973-5958. Please note that
information about the petition process is available on the LPVa
website at www.lpva.com/HTML/2008petitionDrive.php.
Please join me in congratulating Bill Redpath on the successful
completion of his petition drive; he will be on the ballot this fall
as our candidate for the U.S. Senate. Also, please join me in
thanking him for his tremendous work for the presidential petition
drive; he has gathered nearly 1,150 signatures for the presidential
petition drive, in addition to the many signatures he gathered for his
own petition.
Thanks for your work for liberty, and for your help with the petition
drive. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Take care,
Jim
