Friends, Today begins a new experiment. In order to assure more timely news for Libertarian Party members within Virginia, I am initiating "The Old Dominion Liberty Letter". The content will consist of around five brief news items, largely determined by *you*. If you have news you think may be of interest to other Libertarians in the state, please write it up and send it to The Old Dominion Liberty Letter, using the email address <[email protected]>.
Volunteers are needed for this newsletter -- in particular, a permanent editor. Please volunteer by email at <[email protected]> or call me at home at 804-288-2766. With that, here we go! -- Marc Montoni, Managing Editor Pro Tem Old Dominion Liberty Letter ================================================ |*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*| Old Dominion Liberty Letter Issue #1 |*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*|*| ================================================ CONTENTS 1. LPVA Ballot Access Committee ================================================ As most of you know, the LPVA conducted a ballot drive to get Bob Barr on the Virginia ballot this year. We have a letter coming to you soon about this, but the short version is that we spent a large chunk of our ballot-access money on the 2008 drive. It is unknown at this time whether there will be a Libertarian candidate for any of the statewide offices up for election in 2009 (Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General), but if we choose to formally endorse such a candidate at our convention, we will have another ballot-access drive to conduct. There's only one hitch. If someone does volunteer to run, we won't have the money to conduct a new ballot drive! Looking even further ahead, there will be another ballot drive for the National LP's presidential candidate in 2012 -- and as of today, that ballot drive will *begin* in exactly three years. Historically, LPVA has been a good steward of our ballot access "kitty". When we've asked for your donations for ballot drives, the money has remained segregated from other funds and it has gone directly towards paying professional petitioners when our volunteers couldn't drag that rock up the hill by themselves. Please consider starting up a monthly pedge to help us replenish our ballot access fund. If we do end up with one or more statewide candidates in 2009, we will have to be "ready to go" when the petitioning window opens on January 1, 2009. Statewide ballot drives typically require about $15,000 to hire professional petitioners. A monthly pledge is easy. Just go to: http://Contribute.LPVA.com On the screen where it asks for your address information, there is a box that allows you to add any comments about your donation. In that box, please add "for ballot access". Thank you for your time! Oh, one last thing -- a paper letter about this will be in the mail fairly soon. If you wish to help us save a few trees and reduce USPS revenue, if you donate via the online method before noon on January 15th, I can eliminate your copy of the paper mailing. But do this promptly, because the mailing list needs to be at the printer shortly. ================================================ 2. LPVA Facebook group ================================================ Check it out: http://www.FaceBook.com/group.php?gid=12038731669 ================================================ 3. Next SCC Meeting January 2009 ================================================ Mark your calendar for the SCC meeting coming up Saturday, January 24, 2009, slated for the Bleu Bistro in Richmond VA. The snow date is January 31. There will be two other reminders - one in Virginia Liberty on the front page, and another generated from the LPVA calendar at: http://lpva.com/Calendar/default.php Please note: The Draft Minutes from the last state committee meeting on September 20, 2008 are available. Click on the "9/20/08" link: http://lpva.com/Archives/SCCMinutes/Minutes.php Keep in mind this draft has not yet been formally reviewed by the SCC, and thus is subject to correction and to final approval. ================================================ 4. Alternatives to Government - Link of the Week ================================================ Libertarians generally seek to replace government functions with private sector alternatives. With each issue of Old Dominion Liberty Letter, we will review individual alternatives that prove government doesn't need to be involved in all things at all times. Our aim with this column is not only to help provide information that will help our fellow Libertarians find and patronize private-sector alternatives to government functions; but also to help them prepare for that next debate with friends, family, reporters, etc when they ask "if you Libertarians were in charge, who would pick up the garbage?!" We will examine homeschool and private school resources, private, free-market conservation groups, suppliers of transportation infrastructure, alternatives to government courts, and so on. Your suggestions for our first review are hereby requested. Our temporary editors have a couple in mind, but I am sure many of you have ideas that are a lot better than ours. ================================================ 5.
