1. Karen Kwiatkowski @ LP Connecticut
================================================

Virginia LP member Karen Kwiatkowski, speaking at the LP of Connecticut state
convention:

Karen has been a member of the LP for several years now and lives on a farm
with her family in the Shenandoah Valley.

2. Public Schools Don't Teach This, Anymore
================================================

... that is, they don't teach the classics of western literature. You might be
surprised at how much - or how little - you already know about the classics.
Why not take our Classical Quiz (set by Caroline) and find out.. Answers are
below.....(and straight to the corner with you if you don't at least get number
10):

3. Your Leader Stumped By Korea Question
================================================

Your president at work: "Where, oh where, has my tele-prompter gone..."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqMdROiM8wU

The answer was simple, and Ron Paul nails it: Noninterventionism. N Korea
probably wouldn't be so far along in nukes were it not for American technology
transfers to Pakistan's nuclear program, which ultimately got illegally sold to
the socialist paradise. In addition, the American government has been
providing them with millions in aid that has allowed them to continue
developing their military capability rather than their farming and
infrastructure.

Geez. Talk about a contrast in intelligence.

4. Republican dealers targets of "Maobama Motors" Dealer closure lists?
================================================

Banana republic, here we come:

http://www.newsmax.com/timmerman/chrysler_republicans/2009/05/27/218757.html

Of course, it is entirely possible that many of these simply were uncooperative
dealers that Chrysler (and now GM) wanted to eliminate long ago but couldn't
due to state franchise laws:

http://blog.cardomain.com/2009/05/26/chrysler-dealership-closings-why-certain-dealers-were-chosen-over-others/

But government being what it is, I'd be willing to bet there is at least some
Democratic back-scratchery going on.

5. FEATURED VIDEO: 1st Car Made After Government Takeover
================================================

Now this is hilarious -- a spoof video of the new treehugger car that will be
the result of intense government engineering (snicker), forethought (chuckle),
market research (guffaw) and product planning (ROFL):

6.  Liberty Dollar Entrepreneurs Arrested
================================================

It is an outrage that these four people have been arrested for non-crimes, and
will be tried in a federal kangaroo court, where they will not be allowed to
mention the Constitution or many other things, and perhaps be put in cages for
years when they are pronounced "guilty.":

================================================

The most recent national membership information from Libertarian Party
headquarters in Washington DC shows Ohio in 4th place with 671 active members
and Virginia in 5th place with 642 active members (California is in first place
with 1908 active national members).

Let's knock Ohio into the dust. Please take a moment and renew your membership
(or join if you haven't yet) by printing off the form at:

... and send it in with your state & national dues.

9. EXPLORING LIBERTY: The LP's "Personal Relationships" Plank
================================================

This issue, we bring you an exploration of the Libertarian Party's platform
position # 1.3 - Personal Relationships, which reads:

--------
"Sexual orientation, preference, gender, or gender identity should have no
impact on the rights of individuals by government, such as in current marriage,
child custody, adoption, immigration or military service laws. Consenting
adults should be free to choose their own sexual practices and personal
relationships. Government does not have the authority to define, license or
restrict personal relationships."
--------

Policy-wise, this general statement expands to cover many areas of government
regulation of private decisions.

In accordance with the "Personal Privacy" plank, Libertarians generally favor,
for example, eliminating all laws that regulate marriage between consenting
adults. Personal relationships should be regarded as matters for the
individuals directly involved. We support repeal of existing laws and policies
which are intended to condemn or deny, or affirm or encourage (e.g.,
affirmative action laws) sexual lifestyles or any set of attitudes about such
lifestyles.

The right to associate includes the right to refrain from associating.

We believe that adults have the right to private choice in consensual sexual
activity; regardless of so-called "community standards". We oppose any
government attempt to dictate, prohibit, control, or encourage any private
lifestyle, living arrangement or contractual relationship.

Only Libertarians favor the right of all individuals to be left free to make
their own choices in private matters; and only Libertarians expect all
individuals to be held responsible for those choices. All other political
persuasions ask government to be mommy and daddy to the citizens. They forget
that if you treat individuals like children, that is how they will act.

12.  Hospers, 1972 LP Pioneer, Turns 91
================================================

Says Richard Winger: "John Hospers, first Libertarian Party presidential
candidate, turned 91 on June 9, 2009... Hospers is somewhat famous for having
received one electoral vote from Virginia (by one Roger Lea MacBride, a
Republican elector from the Charlottesville area), in 1972. He and George
Wallace are the only actual minor party or independent presidential candidates
who have received an electoral vote in the last 60 years. U.S. Senator Harry
Byrd also received electoral votes, but he was never an announced candidate for
president, even though his name appeared on the ballot in a few states in 1956
(Byrd got his electoral votes in 1960).

Michael Morrison Adds: "John Hospers is a truly admirable character from our
political history. He deserved and deserves more than passing recognition: He
was and is a philosophical giant. The so-called 'news' media preferred to
ignore him, but his reputation is founded on more than his political fling --
he authored textbooks on philosophy that have become standard reading in major
universities. Educated people and thinking people will forever honor the very
great John Hospers. It took a powerful lot of courage for him to risk his name
as the candidate of the fledgling Libertarian Party. It was, in fact,
reminiscent of what the brave men who signed the Declaration of Independence
risked: their lives, their fortunes, their sacred honors. Happy birthday to
one of our American heroes."

14. THE LIGHTER SIDE: A surgeon, an accountant and a politician
================================================

A surgeon, an accountant and a politician were arguing about which of them was
practicing the oldest profession.

The surgeon said "God created Eve from Adam's rib. Obviously, God is a surgeon,
so medicine is the oldest profession."

The Accountant protested, "Before God created Eve from Adam's rib, He created
an orderly universe from chaos. That clearly shows that God was an accountant
before He was a surgeon. Accounting, then, has to be the oldest profession."

The politician sat for a moment wryly smiling, looking at the surgeon and the
accountant. "That may be true," the politician said shrugging his shoulders,
"but who created the chaos?"
