VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: National LP Credential Committee
---------------------------------------------------------

Volunteer to become a National LP Credentials Committee Member!

This position serves the Libertarian Party by preparing and facilitating the
credentialing of delegates to the biennial National LP Convention (to be held
May 28-31, 2010). There are 10 people on the credentials committee; five are
appointed by the LNC and 5 are appointed by the top five states in membership
as of 12/31/2009. The LNC's appointments will be made very early -- they are
scheduled for the July 18th LNC meeting.

Interested individuals who are not selected for a seat can be appointed as
ranked alternates.

INDIVIDUALS SERVING ON THIS COMMITTEE ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND THE 2010
CONVENTION BEING HELD IN ST. LOUIS May 28-31, 2010.

The Credentials Committee is currently working to develop an updated and
streamlined credentialing process for the 2010 convention, creating an
excellent opportunity for an appointee to hit the ground running and
collaborate with colleagues from across the nation. Additionally, the
Credentials Committee works with all the states to ensure that a full, accurate
list of delegates is submitted by each state starting in January 2010 and
leading up to the national convention. Usually a committee member is assigned
to work closely with 5 states to help them fulfill their reporting
requirements. Once the convention starts, Credentials Committee members take
shifts working at the credentials desk to facilitate the check-in and out of
delegates in order to provide accurate counts for voting and other functions.

VOLUNTEER QUALIFICATIONS
------------------------

ARTICLE 11 (Conventions), Section 7, of the Libertarian Party Bylaws (see
http://tinyurl.com/LPBylaws ) list the requirements for the Credentials
Committee as follows: "c. The Credentials Committee, composed of ten members,
shall be selected as follows: Five members chosen by the National Committee;
[and] one member by each of the five affiliate parties having the largest
sustaining memberships as determined for Convention delegate allocations.
These shall be selected by each of the affiliate parties no later than one
month prior to the Regular Convention. ... d. Ranked alternates may be named
by the appointing bodies to fill any vacancies or absences in the Convention
Committees."

Note that while the Bylaws and Rules & Platform Committee members must be Party
members, there is no specific requirement that Credentials Committee appointees
be Party members. However, it is doubtful that nonmembers would be considered
by either the LNC or the five state parties. It is also doubtful that either
would appoint anyone who isn't a **Sustaining** member (e.g., a $25 or more
donor) of the Party.

While none of the below are listed in the Bylaws as requirements for
Credentials Committee applicants, the following skills/attributes would be most
helpful:

- Possess a computer with internet service
- Attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills
- Professional attitude, honesty, and lack of bias under pressure
- Ability to learn complex systems
- Familiarity with MS Office, particularly Excel
- Reliable Internet access (regular email correspondence will be required)
- Familiarity with (or the ability to learn) MS Access
- Previous convention credentialing experience

If you are interested in being considered for one of the five spots that will
be appointed by the LNC, please email a letter of interest and statement of
qualifications to the LNC Secretary, Robert Sullentrup, at [email protected] by
01 July 2009, or click: <mailto:[email protected]?subject=credentials_committee>

---------------------------------

As of right now, Virginia ranks 5th in national LP membership! There is a
chance we will be bumped down to 6th place between now and the 12/31/2009
apportionment deadline, as the New York Libertarian Party is within just three
or four members of Virginia as of last month's (May 31) membership report.
However, on the chance that Virginia will remain in the top five, and thus
qualify to appoint a Credentials Committee member, we are hereby requesting
your letter of interest in the position.

The state appointees don't need to be filed until one month prior to the
opening of the 2010 national convention, or April 28, 2010. However, if
Virginia ends up with one of the Credentials spots as of the 12/31/2009 cutoff,
we will be looking to fill it very soon thereafter -- so get your resumes and
letters of intent in right away!

If you are interested in being considered for the one appointment LPVA **may**
be making, please email a letter of interest and statement of qualifications to
the LPVA Secretary, Marc Montoni, at <[email protected]>, or click:
<mailto:[email protected]?subject=credentials_committee>.

Thank you for your attention!
