1. NATIONAL NEWS: How the US Government Created the 'Drug Problem' in the USA
================================================
Do you still think the government is *fighting* a War on Some Drugs?
http://www.lewrockwell.com/kreca/kreca1.1.1.html
================================================
2. NATIONAL NEWS: Fed Bureaucrat Leaves Loaded Pistol in Airport Bathroom
================================================
Kimmy Janke of Waupaca WI had already gone through security at the airport in
Cleveland (aka 'The Mistake on the Lake'). When she made a stop at a bathroom
in the secured area, she found a loaded .40-caliber laying on top of the toilet
paper dispenser. The gun belonged to a federal customs agent. Channel 2
(WBAY) reporter Matt Smith says the federale has since been allowed to retire
-- with no mention of any disciplinary action.
http://www.wbay.com/Global/story.asp?S=11831863
Only a government employee can leave a loaded gun where any kid could pick it
up, and get away with it.
================================================
3. VIRGINIA NEWS: 2nd, 4th, 7th District Libertarians appoint new officers
================================================
On Tuesday, January 5, the 7th District Libertarian Committee appointed George
Green as its chairman. Our thanks go to outgoing chairman Mark Jainchell, and
congratulations to George Green.
On Saturday, January 15, the 2nd and 4th districts held their conventions.
This author has heard that the 4th appointed Greg Jenkins chair, but as yet
we've not heard from the 2nd. Our thanks to outgoing 4th CD chairman Don
Tabor, who served the LP in that position for several years.
================================================
4. THIS ISSUE'S SUGGESTED ACTIVITY: Cost Them Money
================================================
Help out those poor government thugs who just want more of your money: proudly
display (location of your choice) their free poster by artist Derek Gores.
From the order page:
"On President Obama's birthday, we're within sight of passing a historic health
care bill. As we prepare for what will inevitably be a long Congressional
recess, it's important to appreciate how far we've come in President Obama's
first eight months in office - and the great achievements that lie ahead. ...
In an effort to capture this moment, artist Derek Gores has created an original
piece for health care activists and SEIU members everywhere. Please note - only
ONE poster per person and address."
http://action.seiu.org/page/s/DerekGores
They're waiting to serve you.

5. VIRGINIA NEWS: A Contorted Practice, Challenged
================================================
[With a hat tip to Paul Jacob, with Citizens in Charge
http://thisiscommonsense.com/?p=5650 ]
In his book "Stuff White People Like: The Definitive Guide to the Unique Tastes
of Millions", Christian Lander notes that "Yoga is essentially stretching with
guidance. . . . . You might think that since yoga is such a minimalist
activity, it can be done almost anywhere. But you would be wrong. Yoga must
take place on hardwood floor at a studio. Exposed beams are generally believed
to enhance yoga experiences by 40 percent."
With this droll explanation in mind, you might think that much of the
"specialness" of yoga depends on trivialities, like "$80 pairs of pants."
[EDITOR'S NOTE: Hmmmmm... $80 pairs of pants seems also to be part of the
"specialness" of public schools...]
But the state of Virginia harbors no such cynical thoughts. It understands the
secret of yogas ancient allure: The great chain of instruction must be
regulated by the state.
Virginians are free to do yoga, even in their own dingy homes, and to
inappropriate music, say Bach or the Turtles. Further, any Virginian may teach
yoga. Hey, its a free state. But under no circumstances may a Virginian teach
another Virginian how to teach yoga not without paying heavy administrative
fees in the states vocational licensing system.
Silly, you say?
Yes.
Thankfully, the Institute for Justice teamed up with yoga-teacher trainers
Julia Kalish, Suzanne Leitner-Wise, and Beverly Brown to challenge the law, on
Constitutional grounds.
Now thats soothing.

>From the Libertarian Party platform: "Economic Liberty - A free and
>competitive market allocates resources in the most efficient manner. Each
>person has the right to offer goods and services to others on the free market.
>The only proper role of government in the economic realm is to protect
>property rights, adjudicate disputes, and provide a legal framework in which
>voluntary trade is protected. All efforts by government to redistribute
>wealth, or to control or manage trade, are improper in a free society."

8. EXPLORING LIBERTY: The LP's "Health Care" Plank
================================================
This issue, we bring you the Libertarian Party's platform position # "2.9
Health Care", which reads:
--------
We favor restoring and reviving a free market health care system. We recognize
the freedom of individuals to determine the level of health insurance they
want, the level of health care they want, the care providers they want, the
medicines and treatments they will use and all other aspects of their medical
care, including end-of-life decisions.

Obamacare? What?

10. QUOTABLE QUOTES
================================================
"Brute force, no matter how strongly applied, can never subdue the basic human
desire for freedom and dignity. It is not enough, as communist systems have
assumed, merely to provide people with food, shelter and clothing. Human
nature needs to breathe the precious air of liberty." - the Dalai Lama
