Your Chance to Speak Truth to Power ================================================ From: http://www.reform.virginia.gov/ "In light of the unprecedented budgetary challenges facing the Commonwealth and the increasing demand for core public services, government must become more effective and efficient. ... Governor McDonnells Government Reform & Restructuring Commission will work to put forth bold and innovative ideas to ensure that duplicative, outdated, unnecessary and ineffective services and service delivery methods are eliminated and that state revenues are dedicated to the core functions of government. ... We must make government simpler and easier to use, more efficient and more effective. That is the work of this Commission." Well, slicing off large chunks of it that are useless would be a great initial step... Why does the state give money to propaganda outlets [such as the Public Broadcasting Board], anyway? I wrote up some obvious "just delete them" budget ideas a few years ago here: http://freevirginia.blogspot.com/2007/02/slashing-government.html The numbers may no longer be precise (probably a lot larger now), but I think most people would have no vehement objection to any one of the ideas. Study up on what your government has been spending your money on: http://dpb.virginia.gov/ ... and then write up your suggestions for real reductions to McDonnell, and submit them as written comment. Better yet, show up at one of the town hall meetings -- preferably with a bunch of your libertarian friends in tow -- and be the loudest voice for smaller government. One is scheduled for TONIGHT, July 14 in Augusta County; another in Abingdon on Thursday. http://www.reform.virginia.gov/Meetings/index.cfm ================================================ 2. Gold in Fort Knox ================================================ It's only worth $179,706,000,000. Read more interesting facts about gold here: http://investinganswers.com/a/50-surprising-facts-you-never-knew-about-gold-1370 How many other ways need it be said? The nation is bankrupt. ================================================ 3. Larson Work Target of Fed Propaganda Machine ================================================ Nathan Larson says: "I created the Wikipedia article about the 'National Institute on Drug Abuse' several years ago: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Institute_on_Drug_Abuse ... and in looking through my old, unread messages, noticed someone sent me this news story about the government editing it: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0107/2460.html ================================================ 4. Americans for Tax Reform: Get Ready to Get Looted ================================================ "Ryan Ellis of Americans for Tax Reform recently outlined an outrageous if somewhat predictable reality that will begin on January 1, 2011: A host of existing federal tax rates will increase, and a myriad of brand new Obamacare related taxes will also go into effect. In summation, it will be the largest tax increase in American history. ... Just to cite a few examples, the lowest taxpaying wage earners will pay five percent more than they do now. Those inheriting estates worth over one million dollars will pay a crushing 55% tax. Capital gains taxes will go up another five percent, and dividends taxation will more than double from 15% to almost a whopping 40%. Any and all charitable contributions from IRAs will be banned outright." Emma Goldman and the End of the First Libertarian Movement ================================================ Think libertariansim is a new thing? Well, it's been around longer than one might believe. Consider: "The first American libertarian movement got underway in 1881, when Benjamin R. Tucker published the first issue of his fortnightly paper, Liberty. The movement might well be thought to have died in 1908, with the fire that ended the publication of Liberty after more than 25 years and forced the closure of Tucker's Manhattan bookstore Benj. R. Tucker's Unique Book Shop. After all, the first American libertarian movement was largely Tucker's personal creation, and it centered around his paper, Liberty, and his Unique Book Shop. ... But there is actually a bit more to the story than that. For in fact the first American libertarian movement was not shut down by a fire or by Tucker's early retirement; it was shut down by the US government...." The 24 types of Libertarian ================================================ Normally I wouldn't forward something intended to be derogatory, but our readers may find this comic as entertaining as I did if only to see the most common misperceptions about libertarians in a single place: http://www.lewrockwell.com/blog/lewrw/archives/60682.html That said, in my own experience, most complaints about libertarians such as those illustrated come mainly from other libertarians. ================================================ 7. Criminal 'Crats ================================================ [Now former] Radford police officer Christopher Franklin Bond pleads guilty to meth use/distro: http://www.southwesttimes.com/news.php?id=3668 http://www.roanoke.com/news/breaking/wb/253084 One must wonder if the department considered issuing the usual cop-u-crat excuse that there were "no policy violations, rules or procedures or laws were broken". ================================================ 8. EXPLORING LIBERTY: The LP's "3.6 Representative Government" Plank ================================================ This issue, we bring you the Libertarian Party's platform position #3.6, "Representative Government", which reads: -------- We support electoral systems that are more representative of the electorate at the federal, state and local levels. As private voluntary groups, political parties should be allowed to establish their own rules for nomination procedures, primaries and conventions. We call for an end to any tax-financed subsidies to candidates or parties and the repeal of all laws which restrict voluntary financing of election campaigns. We oppose laws that effectively exclude alternative candidates and parties, deny ballot access, gerrymander districts, or deny the voters their right to consider all legitimate alternatives. -------- ================================================ 9.
